Bariatric Surgery

Yellow, Orange, and Red Arrows pointing different ways

Weight loss surgery has come a long way! It has evolved over the past 15-20 years. The newer weight loss operations are some of the safest operations that we perform at this time. One of the first things that helped to revolutionize weight loss surgery was the advent of advanced laparoscopy – or surgery through little incisions. After this happened, there was a huge jump in technology.  Weight loss surgeons perfected their technique and weight loss surgery became extremely safe.

Approximately 10-15 years ago, an operation became more popular called the sleeve gastrectomy. That has now become the predominate weight loss surgery operation that is performed in the United States. The operation is very straight-forward and one of the safest procedures that we perform for weight loss surgery.

This is very attractive to patients and has created greater interest from overweight individuals who might not have considered it an option for long-term weight loss because they previously heard it was unsafe.

Another operation for weight loss surgery is the gastric bypass. The gastric bypass is an operation where you divide part of the stomach and then you bypass part of the intestines.  As a result, this procedure is more involved, although it is very safe.  The side effects are a bit different than the sleeve gastrectomy.  This is reviewed in more detail in our online webinar.

There are many other procedures for weight loss surgery that are a lot less common and most of the time aren’t covered by insurance companies.

At your consultation appointment, we sit down together to review your individualized health history, and decide what options may be best for you. Helping our patients lose weight and learn how to keep it off for life brings meaning to what we do every day.
