After Bariatric Surgery
A question we are asked frequently is – “How much weight can I expect to lose after weight loss surgery?”
Typically, the amount of weight you can expect to lose would be about 60% of your excess body weight. So, what does that mean? You take the extra weight you’re carrying on your body, which is based on your ideal body weight, and you take the extra weight and that’s your excess weight. If you take 60% of your excess weight, that’s your expected weight loss. An example would be, if you’re 200 pounds overweight, you would expect to lose about 120 pounds.
On average, it takes about a year to get to your expected weight loss. Most patients lose most of the weight the first year and then a little bit more in the second year.
