Tips for Long-Term Success After Weight Loss Surgery From Dr. Kevin Huguet

Florida Bariatric Surgeon Dr. Kevin Huguet and quote "I want you to be successful for life!"

For anyone with 60 or more pounds to lose, weight loss surgery is one of the most effective options for significant weight loss, especially in the first year after surgery. In addition, the remarkable improvement or reversal of other health problems such as Type 2 Diabetes, Hypertension (high blood pressure), and Sleep Apnea makes weight loss surgery even more desirable. During this period of rapid weight loss, it is critical that you also integrate the behaviors and habits that will serve you over time to sustain your new lower weight long-term.  And, as a weight loss surgeon, your victories are also mine – I want you to be successful for life!

To do that, there are some essential things my team and I reinforce with all our patients:

  1. Make the most of the first year after weight loss surgery. It will never be as easy in your life to lose weight as during this first year. Of course, this first year eventually ends, so it is essential to build good habits during this time that will serve you well for the rest of your life.
  2. Focus on staying hydrated. This does your body so much and helps you avoid mistaking hunger for what is a thirst for water. About 60% of our bodies are composed of water; proper hydration affects virtually every function, mental and physical. Sixty-four ounces of water is the least you should be drinking each day. Hot summer days and exercise will increase this requirement.
  3. Right after surgery, you will need to eat throughout the day to get the necessary nourishment. However, after the first month, it is critical to time your meals so that you are not snacking throughout the day. Instead, 2-3 meals will be all you need and desire if you listen closely to the cues your body provides. Between meals, your insulin levels will be lower and more stable – this helps ward off hunger and aids in weight loss.
  4. Follow the meal plan at each phase we outline. You will focus on an adequate amount of quality protein and a controlled amount of carbohydrates – primarily from colorful vegetables. It takes some getting used to, so be sure to rely on your support system, including friends, family, and support group buddies, to follow proper eating habits.
  5. Integrate an activity plan you can live with forever. Cardio is great but not enough. Weight training is also essential to maintain and build your lean body mass, which helps to create a faster metabolism at rest that will serve you well for long-term success.

And remember, you are never alone.  We guide you every step of the way! Contact my team and me if you are ready to get started or have questions.
We look forward to meeting you!
