How Do I Know If I Am a Candidate for Weight Loss Surgery

No matter how much research you complete, you may still have questions regarding whether or not you’re a candidate for bariatric surgery. This is something that you and our bariatric coordinator will discuss before you are scheduled for your initial consultation.

A couple of things that we review together on your initial phone call to the office are your height & weight.  This determines your BMI (body mass index). We are required to follow your specific insurance guidelines when it comes to qualifying criteria for weight loss surgery. Usually that criteria is a BMI of 35-39.9 with a diagnosed comorbidity or a BMI of over 40 with no diagnosed comorbidity. Comorbidities (other health problems) may include hypertension, type 2 diabetes or obstructive sleep apnea, among others. However, three listed are the primary ones your insurance will look for and occasionally you can use another comorbidity such as arthritis or high cholesterol for insurance authorization.  This is based upon your medical history and documentation from your primary care physician.

Prior to our first conversation, you may be wondering “Is surgery right for me?” or “Is it time for surgery?” or “Am I a candidate?”.  This is normal and why we talk first.  Once it is determined that you are indeed a candidate for weight loss surgery, we will schedule your initial consultation with the surgeon.

Most patients have their one deciding factor that makes them seek weight loss surgery options and give us a call. For some, it’s not being able to fit on the rollercoaster with their child and that is the last string. For others, it’s just feeling so tired and zapped of energy all the time. Most patients know the exact moment that they are ready to begin their surgical journey.  However, we make sure that we work together to ensure you are ready and that you are a candidate before you arrive at the office.

This process does not have to be confusing.  We would be honored to guide you every step of the way.  To get started, you can complete our initial contact form at https://weightlossofflorida.com/make-appointment/   Our caring bariatric coordinator will be in contact with you, answer your questions and if you are a candidate for weight loss surgery, she will assist you on sorting through insurance requirements and beginning your successful weight loss surgery journey.
